LECTIO POETICA:
Poetry as Spiritual Practice

DECEMBER 14, 2019
9 AM TO 4 PM

Sliding Scale: $65-95

Facilitated by Wendy Sarno

It has been said that poetry is the language of soul so why not let poems guide us into the deeper pathways of meditation and prayer? Following the ancient practice of Holy Reading, we will let the poetry of some of our great poets from Rumi to Mary Oliver lead us deeper into our conversation with Divine Mystery.

The day will begin with a Poetry Dive, a delicious process that includes movement, meditation and long, leisurely listening to spoken poetry, followed by some writing and personal sharing.

During the afternoon a variety of processes will be presented for using poems to deepen our communications with the Sacred. We will have time for discussion in the small group, for the slow, quiet listening to poems in private reading and solitary time for reflection.

The day is not about writing poems, tho we often discover the Soul speaking thru us in surprising ways when we let ourselves go deeper into the images and rhythms of poetry.

Praying

It doesn’t have to be
the blue iris, it could be
weeds in a vacant lot, or a few
small stones; just
pay attention, then patch

a few words together and don’t try
to make them elaborate, this isn’t
a contest but the doorway

into thanks, and a silence in which
another voice may speak.”

― Mary Oliver, Thirst
